MaXXformer aftercare: what to do (and avoid) in 48 hours

If you just finished your first private class with Doug and you already can’t wait to go back, do this one thing first: cool down for 5 to 10 minutes with gentle mobility and slow breathing. Then hydrate. MaXXformer work is focused and intense in a very specific way, so the next 48 hours matter. Take care of your body now and you’ll feel the “strong and stretched” feeling longer, with less unnecessary soreness.
The first 24 to 48 hours after MaXXformer: the exact do’s and don’ts
Right after your 1 Private MaXXformer session, we generally recommend a short reset before you jump back into life. Think: easy neck rolls, shoulder circles, hip openers, ankle pumps, and a few deep diaphragmatic breaths. It helps your heart rate come down and keeps that “tight in a good way” feeling from turning into stiffness.
48-hour rule of thumb: keep movement light and intentional. Skip heavy lifting and high-impact cardio for 24 to 48 hours so your muscles recover instead of getting piled on.
Do this within 60 minutes
- Hydrate and add electrolytes if you tend to sweat a lot or it’s hot out.
- Eat a small snack with protein (and a little carb) so your body has what it needs to rebuild.
- Take a short walk. In the Birch Hill area of Locust Valley, calm sidewalks and a few minutes of easy walking are perfect for keeping everything loose.
Avoid these common “I feel great, so I’ll do more” mistakes
- High-impact cardio the same day (running, jumping workouts, hard spin efforts).
- Heavy lower-body lifting or max effort core work for 24 to 48 hours.
- Sitting for hours right after. Desk-bound tightness tends to feel louder after a private session, so stand up and move around.
And one Locust Valley reality check: North Shore summer heat can sneak up on you. If you’re heading back to your car or the LIRR after a midday session, plan on extra water and a few minutes to cool down before you drive.
Days 2 to 7: keep the “strong and stretched” feeling without overdoing it
A good private MaXXformer session often leaves you feeling worked, but also longer and more open. We hear “strong and stretched” a lot, especially after a first session where we guide you carefully through the flow. Your job in the first week is to protect that.
Keep light movement in your day. Walking, gentle mobility, and easy stretching usually do more for recovery than collapsing on the couch. If your abs, inner thighs, glutes, or upper back feel fatigued, that’s normal targeted muscle work. Don’t punish it with another brutal workout.
Quick win for commuters: if you’re desk-bound in Locust Valley or commuting through Oyster Bay or Glen Cove, set a timer and stand up every hour. Two minutes of hip flexor opening and gentle spine rotation can keep soreness from settling in.
If you loved the private session and you’re already thinking about coming right back, we get it. Just give your body enough time to absorb the work so your next session builds strength instead of chasing fatigue.
Ice vs heat after MaXXformer soreness, plus the habits that actually help
Let’s keep this practical. If you have a focal spot that feels irritated or puffy, ice is usually the better choice for the first 24 to 48 hours. Think 10 to 15 minutes, with a cloth barrier, then reassess.
If it’s more of a stubborn tightness, gentle heat can feel great after that initial window, especially paired with easy stretching. The key word is gentle. You’re trying to help tissue relax, not cook yourself.
The three recovery habits we care about most
- Sleep. It’s when your strength gains really lock in.
- Gentle movement daily so you don’t tighten up around the work you just did.
- Enough fluids, especially in warm months on the North Shore.
If you’re thinking about swimming or a sauna, keep it easy and listen to your body. Heat and heavy sweating can dehydrate you fast, so rehydrate and don’t treat it like a second workout.
When soreness is normal, and when we want you to reach out
Mild to moderate muscle soreness is common, especially after your first 1 Private MaXXformer session or if we challenged you. Feeling a little shaky in your abs or legs can happen too. A lot of people love that they got a real full-body workout and stretch, and they feel it the next day.
“She guided me safely and carefully as we flowed on the machine. I left feeling strong and stretched.”

Quick aftercare FAQ for your 1 Private MaXXformer ($150)
How long will I be sore after a 1 Private MaXXformer session?
Most people feel it most the next day, and it tends to fade over 24 to 72 hours. If it was your first time, soreness can linger a bit longer. Gentle movement and hydration usually help more than total rest.
Can I do cardio after my MaXXformer workout the same day?
We generally recommend skipping intense cardio the same day. If you want to move, choose an easy walk and light mobility work. Save the hard stuff for the next day or two.
When can I schedule my next 1 Private MaXXformer session?
A lot of clients feel great booking another session after a couple of days, once soreness settles. If you’re very sore or you’re managing back or neck issues, give it a little more time and let us know what you’re feeling so we can plan smart.
Should I use ice or heat for MaXXformer soreness?
Ice is a good choice for an irritated, inflamed feeling in the first 24 to 48 hours. Heat is often better for lingering tightness after that. If you’re unsure, tell us what you’re feeling and where, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Can I swim or go to a sauna after a MaXXformer session?
Easy swimming can be fine if you keep it gentle and you’re not sore in a way that changes your stroke. Sauna can feel good, but watch dehydration, especially in summer. Rehydrate and don’t stack heat and hard exercise back-to-back.
Want us to map your next 2 sessions around your body’s recovery?
